George William Penland was born to John Penland and Jean Cathey about 1753 in St. Georges Hundred, New Castle, Delaware.

George moved to Rowan County, North Carolina in 1768. He met, and married Elizabeth "Betsy" Anne Alexander in 1772 in Salisbury, Rowan County,
North Carolina. Elizabeth was the daughter of James and Rachel Alexander of Rowan County.

After he moved to Rowan County, George bought land and eventually owned several hundred acres in Buncombe County, on Reems Creek. He also bought a city lot in Asheville from Robert Brank abt 1799.

George was a Captain during the Revolutionary War. In a book about the Presbyterian Church on the frontier, it is mentioned that one of Captain Penland's duties was to get the women & children into the Fort during an Indian raid.

He died about 1829 and was buried in the Vance Family Cemetery in Buncombe County, N. C. Elizabeth died in 1833 and is also buried in the Vance Family Cemetery.
