Miller Will

Will of Rosetta Miller, of 373 E. Fourth St., who died May 28, provides:

To nephew, George H. Smallridge $1,000.00.
To sister, Nancy Fout $500.00
To brother, Marion Salts $500.00
To Daughter, Mary Smith $200.00
To Daughter Helen C. Barnhart $100.00
To Daughter Nellie Rittinger $100.00
To Daughter Dorothy Yates $100.00
To Daughter Hazel Kaiser $100.00

All household goods are to be turned into cash by the executor.

The real estate at 373 E. Fourth St. is left to Clifford E. and Rosie B. Fout in equal shares, and in fee simple; and all the remainder of the estate goes to Clifford Fout, who is named as executor, without bond.

The will was drawn January 8, 1949.

- Will published in Chillicothe Gazette.

I found it in my Grandfather, Talmadge G. Smallridge's papers. The Rosie B. Fout listed in the will was Rosa B. (Burt) Fout, the sister of my Grandmother, Edna Iola (Burt) Smallridge. Rosie married Clifford E. Fout, who was one of the nine children of Nancy Sophrone (Salts) Fout, who was Rosetta's and my great Grandmother, Eliza Ella (Salts) Smallridge's sister.

The Salts, The Smallridges, The Burts, The Arbaughs, The Fouts and The Millers were all from Harrison Township in Vinton County, and grew up together, and married each other.

As mining and the timber businesses died out in Vinton County, everyone migrated to Ross, Pickaway and Fairfield Counties to follow the growth of new industries and jobs.

But then there was Rosetta and Nancy and Eliza's brother, Marion Salts, that is named in the will who packed up his wife and two children and moved to Oregon.

Today, Vinton County has a population of less than 14,000, and is one of the poorest of the 88 counties in Ohio.
