Birth: Aug. 4, 1832
Randolph County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Jan. 3, 1901
Texas County
Missouri, USA

William Frank Cavaness was the son of Edward Clark Cavaness and lst wife Lovina J. Craven. Lovina is believed to be related to the Craven family of Licking, MO.

William Frank Cavaness first married Martha J. Ward. Their children were Thomas Matthew Cavaness #10566143, and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Cavaness) Sliger #20333587.

William Frank Cavaness second wife was Sarah Brown #41941254. Their children were Alexander Washington "Bud" Cavaness #20358227, William E. Cavaness burial place unknown, Andrew D. Cavaness burial place unknown, Martha Malinda (Cavaness) Blankenship #19925468, Alfred R. Cavaness #20334255, and Lorenzo Cavaness burial place unknown. Lorenzo was not living in 1898 when his father William Frank Cavaness applied for a pension, nor was he listed as an heir in his fathers will. He must have died as a child under ten years of age.

William Frank Cavaness enrolled 31 Aug 1863, a Sgt. Co. K, 6 Prov. Regt. E MO. Mil Cav. (Capt. Absalem McKinney's Co). He was honorably discharged at Houston, MO, 15 Mar 1864. Pension application, 3 Oct 1894, gave his age as 61 years old and residence as Licking, MO.

William Frank Cavaness owned a large tract of land near Licking, and one day while walking over part of it he came upon a small plat that he immediately decided was the spot where he wished to be buried, and told his family to put him there. The cemetery is known as the Van Cleve Cemetery. It has been told that his grave was the first to be put there, but there is one stone with a date before his. If either of his wives are buried in the Van Cleve Cemetery there is no marker for them. Other members of the Cavaness family are also buried in the Van Cleve Cemetery. William Frank Cavaness donated the land for the Van Cleve Cemetery.

A son, Alexander Washington "Bud" Cavaness, obituary indicates that his mother (Sarah Brown Cavaness) is buried in the Van Cleve Cemetery. Note: Sarah Brown Cavaness does not have a tombstone in the Van Cleve Cemetery.
