Permelia Cavaness was the daughter of Edward Clark Cavaness and second wife Mary Ann (Johnson) Cavaness.
Permelia's brothers and sister were: Josephus Cavaness, James Henry Cavaness, Thomas Monroe Cavaness, George Washington Cavaness, John Gilmore Cavaness and Virginia Ellen (Cavaness) Fitzgerald.
Permelia Cavaness married John Ormsby and had 3 children William, Fannie and Mary Bell. In 1883 or 1884 Permelia's husband, John Ormsby, ran away with another woman. Permelia and children lived with her mother, Mary Ann (Johnson) Cavaness at Licking, MO. The grandmother, Mary Ann (Johnson) Cavaness hated John Ormsby, she had the children tell everyone their last name was Cavaness instead of Ormsby. The children, William, Fannie and Mary Bell grew up as Cavaness and kept the name. William married Ellen Cantrell; Fannie married Emory Green and Mary "Belle" was not married.
Permelia Frances Cavaness was born in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1851, and departed this life Dec. 4, 1931 at the home of her daughter in Cobden, Illinois. She leaves two daughters and one son William Cavaness, two brothers, one sister and many other friends. She was converted about 20 years ago during a bad spell of illness. She was never well any more and hence never joined any church, but was a firm believer in the Baptist faith. The body was brought to Licking for burial and was laid to rest in Van Cleve Cemetery Sunday afternoon after a brief service conducted by the writer. An undertake from Illinois had charge of the burial.
