Dr. Charles "Chuck" F. Heider, Jr. died Wednesday, March 30 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center . Dr. Heider was born in Sutherland , NE on Feb 4,1924 to Dr. Charles F. Heider, Sr. and Bonnie Crane Heider. The family moved to North Platte and in 1932 moved to a home built on property purchased from the William F. Cody estate. During high school, Chuck played basketball and football, participated in marching band and Demolay, and was president of High Y. He graduated from North Platte High School in December 1941.
Following his graduation he attended University of Nebraska — Lincoln and graduated in 1945 with a bachelors' degree. He graduated from medical school in 1947. He pledged and was a member of ATO, as well as Phi Rho medical fraternity. He was accepted for a surgical residency in 1949. In November 1950, he was inducted into the U.S. Air Force where he served in Japan as a lieutenant, and was promoted to Captain in Suwan , South Korea as Chief of Surgery. After his discharge, he completed his senior residency in surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha . In 1954, he returned to North Platte and joined the surgery/general medicine practice with his father. In 1994, he retired from his medical practice at the age of 70.
On September 16, 1950, he married Nancy Garey. He was a devoted husband and loving, involved father and grandfather. Along with Nancy , they raised two children, Cindy and Garey. Dr. Heider was active in the community as a member of Kiwanis and Rotary service clubs, and President of the North Platte Development Corporation. He led efforts to establish the North Platte Junior College and Mid-Plains Voc Tech School which later became Mid-Plains Community Col!ege. He was also active in the creation of Great Plains Medical Center in 1975 and served as Vice-President of the hospital's corporate board. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 60 years. In addition to his community activities, Chuck was a hunting enthusiast and enjoyed his time spent at the family farm in Hershey , NE. He raised and raced thoroughbred horses and was an avid Husker fan. He knew how to balance his life successfully between work, relaxation, family and community obligations.
He is survived by his children, daughter, Cindy Heider Kaliff, of Lincoln ; son and daughter-in-law, C. Garey and Susan Heider, of North Platte ; grand-daughter Whitney Johns, husband Doug and great- grand-son James, Hampstead , North Carolina ; and grand-daughter Keiley Heider, Chicago , Illinois. He was preceded in death by wife Nancy and parents, Bonnie and Charles. Services will be April 2, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in North Platte followed by a private family burial service.
