Rebena Jardin Byrne
Birth: Dec. 21, 1872
Northport
Suffolk County
New York, USA
Death: Nov. 8, 1947
Huntington
Suffolk County
New York, USA

Rebena Jardin was born on Long Island soon after her mother's family arrived from Scotland. According to Scottish tradition, since her mother was a widow, Rebena lived with her grandparents Grace and John Inglis. Evidence suggests the Inglis family lived near Fresh Pond in what today is called Fort Salonga, NY. Rebena's mother, Mary Barton Inglis and new husband, James Munro raised a family at St. Johnland.

When Rebena was of legal age, in 1890, she married Austin Thomas Byrne who was about 13 years her senior. He was in the area between 1886 and 1890, working on the King's Park facility. Austin was a civil engineer who traveled throughout Cuba and South and Central America working on various engineering projects. Once married with children, the Byrne family spent a good deal of time in Cuba. In fact, family lore tells us that their son, Oliver, spoke Spanish before he spoke English.

Rebena's children were brought up in Baldwin, NY. The family owned property in the "v" between Foxhurst Rd. and Grand Ave. Austin retired and the couple sold their property in Baldwin shortly after the end of WWI. At that time they had lost their daughter, Louise who served with the Army Nurse Corps and Terry, their youngest child was 14 year old. The couple purchased and moved to a fruit farm in Ardonia, Ulster County, NY.

After Austin's death, Rebena moved to St. Cloud, Florida where she speculated on land, buying and selling many parcels. Her grandson, Jack Byrne, recalls her visits when he was a boy when she smoked a pipe in her bedroom. Her granddaughters Janice and Louise recall her visits to their house "between trips." Apparently Rebena would hop on a bus and go to Wyoming, Florida or wherever she felt like going. Some speculation exists that she may have owned property in Wyoming.

Her obituary:
Mrs. R. J. Byrne Rites Tomorrow

Services for Mrs. Rebena J. Byrne, 75, widow of Austin T. Byrne, noted author and civil engineer, will be held at 1:30pm tomorrow in the Jacobsen Funeral Home, Huntington Station. Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield.

Mrs. Byrne, taken ill at her Winter home in St. Cloud, Fla. three weeks ago, died yesterday at Huntington Hospital.

Her husband, who died in 1934, won distinction as an author of technical books relating to engineering. He was well known in engineering circles and had offices at 350 Fulton St. for 20 years.

Source of obit: Nov. 9, 1947, Brooklyn Eagle (Brooklyn, NY)

Sometime after her husband, Austin's death, Rebena had an apparently short and unhappy marriage to Frank L. Kemmy (or Frank Kenny). Nothing further is known at this time about Mr. Kemmy but he may be the Lochlan F. Kimmey found in the 1880 Census near Albany, NY and the Frank L. Kemmy found with a fruit farm in Platekill, NY in the 1930 Census. According to the Suffolk County, New York Surrogate Court's probate file #663P1947 for Rebena J. Byrne Kemmy, Rebena's 1938 will left only $50 to Frank and when she died in 1947, the couple were noted as divorced. Frank tried to contest the will and did not succeed.
