He was a medical doctor and a strong secesssionist. He was one of the signers of South Carolina's "Ordinance of Secession" from the Union, 20 December 1860. He was home in bed and very sick when Sherman's "heroes" occupied the area and was severly beaten by several of these "Yankee Heroes" for his signature on The Ordinance. His death was most likely the last from Lancaster County in defense of his home.
