Birth: Nov. 28, 1860
Shelby County
Indiana, USA
Death: Jan. 19, 1928
Russell County
Kansas, USA

Mary Louise Belveal was not yet two years old in the summer of 1862 when her father Landon enlisted in the Union Army and joined Company G of the 5th Indiana Cavalry Regiment. In December of that year, Landon Belveal was discharged due to wounds received. By 1870, the family, including seven children, was heading west from Indiana, by way of Iowa, to claim a homestead near modern Tipton, Mitchell County, Kansas. This was 200 miles west of Kansas City and still open range for the great bison herds and non-reservation plains Indians. According to a family story, when Mary was a girl, a large buffalo herd stampeded straight for her family's remote homestead, destroying everything in its path. When the herd reached the cabin where she and her family were taking shelter, it split and went around the little structure, leaving them shaken but unhurt from their close call with disaster. [Painting, "A Close Call" by western artist Charles M. Russell (1864-1926).] Even more destructive were the plagues of Rocky Mountain locusts (grasshoppers) that wiped out their crops in the 1870's. But Landon and Effie Belveal endured, had five more children, and lived on their homestead for 40 years. Their daughter Mary Louise was my grandmother Susan Mahala Barton Palmer's aunt by marriage to George Joshua "Josh" Barton. Mary and George's 10 children, born between 1882 and 1904, were part of a large group of Barton cousins who grew up together in the Osborne-Russell-Lincoln counties area of Kansas around the turn of the century. Over 100 years later, some descendants remain in the area, including one of the cousins at age 104. -LP
