Daniel F. McCurdy was born 8 February 1882 near Dickens (Freeman Township), Clay County, Iowa, to William R. and Celinda (Klopp) McCurdy. Daniel ran a hardware store in Dickens, Iowa.
Daniel had been courting Fannie Culver in Dickens, Iowa, at the time his brother Maurice was away attending college. When Maurice returned to Dickens, he began seeing Fannie and they married. Daniel never married. His burial place is near Fannie.
Daniel subsequently moved to Two Harbors, Minnesota with his parents and then once again ran a hardware store with his father. He spent his last 15 years in San Francisco, California, where he worked as a railroad trackman for the Transportation Corps, San Francisco Port of Embarkation, Fort Mason, California, and lived in San Francisco, California.
He died 7 March 1945 at Portland, Oregon, while traveling by train to Broadus, Montana, to visit his brother Ralph's family. He had been ill for several months before the trip but was examined by a physician and thought to be in good enough shape for the trip. His brother Matthew saw him off. At Portland he was removed from the train on March 2 and taken to St. Vincent's Hospital where he died March 7 from heart failure. His funeral was held 13 March 1945 in Spencer, Iowa.
