William R. McCurdy, son of Robert J. and Mary E. Sandborn (Morgan) McCurdy, was born 27 June 1858 at Marion, Iowa. William's mother died six weeks after his birth and he was raised for the first year by a neighbor and then by his older sister Mary Elizabeth. He married Celinda Klopp 1 December 1880 at Marion, Iowa.
After their marriage, William and Celinda moved to Clay County, Iowa, where they farmed two miles east of Dickens. In 1888 they moved into Dickens where William operated a hardware store. This was the second store in the newly established village. In Dickens, William helped organize the school district, the creamery and the layout of the cemetery. The family lived in Dickens until 1908 when they moved to Two Harbors, Minnesota, where William went into the hardware business with his son Daniel. William and Celinda resided in Two Harbors until 1925 when he retired. They then began spending winters in Lakeland, Florida. William died 27 April 1927 at Marion, Iowa, while visiting at the home of his brother-in-law, George Patschke. They had spent the winter in Florida and were on their way home to Two Harbors, Minnesota.
They had eleven children, ten of whom survived to adulthood.
