He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and went to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas; Myrtle Beach Air Force Base and later served in Turkey and Labrador.
He retired from American Can Company in 1999. He belonged to the North Carolina Chapter of Studebaker Drivers Club for 30 years and held several offices.
He attended Ardmore Baptist Church. Mr. Shontz was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving is his wife, Kim Soon Shontz, whom he married May 16, 1982. In addition to his mother and step father, Robert Lee, he is also survived by his brother, Robert D. Shontz and wife, Danna; a niece, Kellee L. Shontz, all of Fostoria, Ohio; and two step-sisters, Linda Mitchell and husband, Tom, and Barbara Veselka and husband, Joe.
The funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Dr. Bill Ireland officiating.
Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
