Robert Calvery lived most of his early life in Sheffield, Alabama, graduated from Sheffield High School, earning a football scholarship to Pepperdine College. An early injury cut his time short there, so he completed His education in various other universities.

He was the son of Mary Sherin and James William (J.W.)Calvery, his sisters were Bonnie and Sheary. The family attended church at Annapolis Avenue Church of Christ.


He was a member of the Ball Church of Christ in Dora, Missouri, where he also served as a minister.

He had been superintendent at Flippin for six years and had planned to retire at the end of this school year. In 1999, the Flippin School Board voted unanimously to hire Dr. Calvery. Dr. Calvery had been superintendent at Batesville Southside for 10 years before coming to Flippin. He had been superintendent at Sulphur Rock for four years from 1985-89. Dr. Calvery received his master's degree in education at Tennessee Tech university. He then received his doctorate in superintendency from the Mississippi State University. While studying for his doctorate, he taught at the university as well, also had taught in high school for seven years, spent six years as principal and three years as an assistant superintendent. In addition, Dr. Calvery spent two years as an assistant superintendent. He also had spent two years as hospital administrator. Memorials were made to Crowley's Ridge Academy, or Children's Home Inc. of Paragould.

He is survived by his wife, son, daughter and 5 grandchildren. He died on Monday morning, March 7, at Baxter Regional Medical Center.
Visitation was held at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville, Arkansas on Wednesday, March 9, from 6:00-8:00 p.,.
Interment took place in the Fairview Cemetery in Flippin, Arkansas.
Services were held on Wednesday, March 10, 2005 at Mountain home church of Christ, Mountain Home ,Arkansas, with brother David Shipley officiating.
