*********************************************
HEARTFELT THANKS TO MY FRIEND, STEVE EDQUEST, FOR SPONSORING MY UNCLE STUART'S MEMORIAL. IT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME.
*********************************************

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR VISITING MY SPECIAL UNCLE.

My uncle Stuart was a fireman on the oiler Neosho. His ship was in anchored in what is known as Battleship Row in Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Neosho was able to maneuver its way out of the harbor and escape.

Later, during the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Neosho was mistaken for a battleship and bombed by the Japanese planes. Some sailors were rescued. My uncle went down with the ship.

My mother told me that my Grandma Battenfield's hair turned gray overnight. Stuart was their oldest child and only son. I also heard that he believed in what he was doing, that is: fighting for our country and freedom.

The day I joined Find a Grave was the day that I found his memorial on the site. I don't think any of us knew there was a memorial to him in the Philippines. His name has been included on my grandparents' headstone in Lansing, MI. They had no other way to honor him.

Sister: Alverna Maude Battenfield Smith

IF YOU HAVE TIME, PLEASE VISIT THE CAPTAIN OF MY UNCLE'S SHIP, WHO ALSO GAVE HIS LIFE:Oscar Verner Peterson
