MILWAUKEE, WIS. - Ione Hinman Buyse died on Sept. 10, 2012. A resident of Alexian Village retirement community since 1993, she was born in Oneida on April 17, 1916. Her father, Ralph L. Hinman, and grandfather invented the Hinman milking machine, which was widely used in Wisconsin during the first half of the 20th century; her mother, Ione Ingersoll Hinman, was very active in civic affairs. A graduate of Oneida High School, she graduated from the University of Rochester in 1938 with a bachelor of arts degree and in 1940 received a master's degree in music theory from the Eastman School of Music. That year she married her high school sweetheart, Leonard C. Buyse, a teacher at Ithaca High School who later became a top administrator in the Ithaca Public Schools. Although her husband and children were always her top priority, she taught piano privately and was very active as a volunteer. The Buyses moved to Alexian Village in 1993 to be near their son and his family. There they worked together on the Chapel Committee and also were instrumental in developing a recycling program. Ione is survived by her son, Alan Buyse (Kathy) of Sussex; her daughter, Leone Buyse (Michael Webster) of Houston, Texas; two granddaughters, a great-grandson, a sister-in-law, three nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her husband in 2002 and her brother, Arthur Hinman, in February 2012. The family is holding a private memorial service.
