He was revered by Northwest tribes as a revolutionary leader for his stands on tribal fishing rights and sovereignty. He died in 1991 of a heart attack in a Canadian jail while awaiting extradition to the United States. He was buried in full tribal headdress and traditional buckskins beneath a shiny black headstone cut in the shape of an arrowhead.
