DAVIS Robert C. Davis, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, companion, and friend, passed away on November 7, 2009. He was a native of Hortense, GA. He served his country proudly during World War II, and after landing at Utah Beach on July 4th, 1944, he saw active combat as a Master Sargeant in the United States Army, 8th Division, 121st Infantry. He was wounded three times, earning three Purple Hearts, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his courage in battle. He continued to serve his country after returning home by participating in the research and development of prosthetics for use by other soldiers who had experienced injuries similar to his own. He married Thelma Jean Botts on December 10, 1945, a lieutenant in the US Army Nursing Corps, whom he met during his recuperation. After their discharge from the military, they relocated to Jacksonville where they made their home in the Arlington area for more than 50 years. They had one son (Robert Charles Davis), one daughter (Lydia Jean Harrington), one granddaughter (Mary Katherine Davis) and one grandson (John Rex Kirkland). Mr. Davis was predeceased by his wife of nearly 54 years and his son. After his military service, Mr. Davis went on to a career as a draftsman and sanitation designer. He was also a member of the Arlington Volunteer Fire Department, and for several years, served as Fire Chief of that organization. He was an avid outdoorsman and had a deep appreciation of nature and respect for all life that he passed on to his descendants. Mr. Davis was a long time member of Arlington United Methodist Church, and possessed an unshakable faith in God. Late in life, as a widower, Mr. Davis was blessed with the companionship of his dear friend, Louise Raymond, whose recent passing on October 2 was mourned by all. Mr. Davis will forever be remembered by his family and friends as a man of integrity and compassion. His home was the center of his life, and he extended humor, love, and kindness to all who entered it. Mr. Davis, in his final hours, asked God to bless his family and friends and to let them know he loved them. He left us at peace, thanking God and saying, 'I've had a wonderful life.' The family will receive visitors on Wednesday evening, 5-7 p.m. November 11, at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd. His funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 12, and internment will be at 2 p.m. at Palmetto Cemetery in Brunswick, GA, following a graveside service.
