He is the son of Francis Marion Barnes and Mary Jase "Mollie" Clem of Alabama. Francis served in the 35th Alabama - Civil War.
Husband of Lula May Gordon Rush - Married March 13, 1923. There are notes that say that Bernard always called Lula "wife" and she always called him "Mr.Barnes". They both loved to dip snuff. Lula was his second wife. His first wife was Mary Tabor. They had a baby boy

LAST RITES IN DALLAS FOR BERNARD BARNES
Bernard Barnes, age 86, died in a Dallas Hospital (Baylor) Thursday, March 21, 1974. He was the last of thirteen children of a PIONEER FAMILY in this community. Born in Alabama, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Barnes, he grew up in Rockwall County and later moved to Dallas.
Funeral services for Mr. Barnes were conducted in Dallas Saturday, March 23, at 2:30 p.m. from the Douglas M. Highes Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Grove Hill Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Barnes; one son, Bernard Barnes, Jr.; one step-son, Jack Johnson; two step-daughters; Mrs. Mary Brown and Mrs. Elsie Johnson: five great-grand-children. Mrs. Paul Andre and Mrs. Mims Williamson are nieces.
Father of Bernard Nod Barnes,Jr..Lula had 3 children when she married Bernard from her 1st marriage to Jack Johnson, Sr. of Alabama - Jack Johnson, Jr.; Mary Sue and Elsie Johnson. The family lived for years in Dallas, TX on Phillips Street at intersection with I-30 in East Dallas. Modern day 2011, a CoMerica Bank has been constructed at this location - all remaining are the huge pecan trees. Bernard's family came to Texas in late 1880's and settled in Rockwall County, TX. He had 12 siblings - 13 children to work the farmland.
Grandson Tim Barnes recalls that Paw was an upholsterer for a man named White Luna. He gave the family a blue naugahyde couch & chair in the early 60's,they lasted a long time. Daughter-in- law Marian Tanner Barnes is 85 yrs old at the time of this writing.
**Bernard was first married to Mary Tabor, they had a son Cecil. He died 12/22/1911 of small pox. Buried in Parker Cemetery in Rockwall, TX.
Cause of death: medulary failure due to cardiovascular accident due to cereboralkersclerosis at age 85.
