HEART ATTACK IS FATAL FRIDAY TO JOHN R. JACKSON
Well known attorney succumbs to attack in McConnellsburg
A severe heart attack suffered at McConnellsburg during the day proved fatal at 11:00 last night in the Waynesboro Hospital to John R. Jackson, age 61 years, of Sunnyside Avenue, well known attorney.
Mr. Jackson was in McConnellsburg during the day conducting his practice when he suffered the attack. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
Mr. Jackson was born in Brush Creek Township, Fulton County [Pennsylvania] and lived on a farm until 16 years of age when he went to Burlington, Kansas in 1898 and worked on a farm and lived with his uncle for 3 years. He was graduated from Emporia Business College in Emporia Kansas in 1901.
He served as clerk in the auditor's office of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Memphis Railroad in Kansas City in 1901. In 1902 he went to work for the Kansas City Board of Trade as Official Waymaster.
In the fall of 1903 Mr. Jackson worked as a traveling salesman for the F. S. Love Mfg. Co. of Johnstown [Pennsylvania].
He entered Dickinson Seminary at Williamsport [Pennsylvania] in the fall of 1904 and was graduated there in 1907. He played football for 3 years at the Seminary. In the fall of 1907 he entered Dickinson College [Pennsylvania] where he also played football. In the fall of 1908 he entered Dickinson Law School and was graduated from there in 1911. He was admitted to the Fulton County [Pennsylvania] Bar in 1911.
Mr. Jackson served as Food Administrator for Fulton County during World War I. He was admitted to the State Supreme Court in 1913. And in 1920 was admitted to the Franklin County Bar and in 1930 we admitted t9o the US District Court.
Mr. Jackson began his law practice in McConnellsburg [Pennsylvania] January 1, 1916 and lived there until 1920 when he moved to Chambersburg [Pennsylvania] where he formed a law partnership with T. Z. Minehart. In 1923 this partnership was dissolved.
On January 1, 1926 he came to Waynesboro [Pennsylvania] and took over the practice of Watson R. Davison who was elected Judge of the Franklin County [Pennsylvania] Courts.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and took an active part in it's activities. He was a teacher of the Men's Bible Class.
In politics he was a Republican and in 1936 he was the Republican nominee for State Senate in the Franklin/Adams District.
Mr. Jackson was a member of the Blue Lodge, F.&A.M. in Kansas City, and the Royal Arch Chapter. He was a member of the Continental Commandery #156 of Chambersburg [Pennsylvania] and the Zembo Temple in Harrisburg [Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Waynesboro Building and Loan Association and for many years served as the associate attorney, He was also the solicitor for the Citizens National Bank & Trust Company. He was a member of the Waynesboro Rotary Club.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Stevens: one daughter, Mrs. Edward L Ullman, Arlington, Va.; four brothers and 1 sister, Charles of Altoona [Pennsylvania]; Hunter of Altoona; Trevor of Breezewood, Pa; Phillip of Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. B. N. Stewart of Hooverville, Somerset Co [Pennsylvania].
The funeral will be held at the Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in charge of the Rev. Bart E. Crites. Burial will be in Burns Hill Cemetery [Waynesboro, Pennsylvania]. Services at the grave will be in charge of the Masonic Order. The body will lie in state at the church from 2:30 until the time of the funeral.
