| Birth: | Nov. 6, 1838 | | Death: | Feb. 8, 1920 | Serenia J. Richardson married John B. Sloan in 1856. When the Civil War began John joined the Army of the Confederacy and was a private in Hamilton's Cavalry. He was captured on March 5, 1863, in Jackson County, Tennessee, and sent to military prison in Louisville, Kentucky. On March 20, he was transferred to Camp Butler Prison Camp in Illinois where he was offered a full pardon if he would swear an oath of allegiance to the United States. He did so and fought for the U.S. Army. In exchange, the government sent for Serenia and their three children, bringing them to Illinois. After the war ended, they stayed on in Illinois for about ten years. Then the family moved back to Tennessee to find that their old home had been burned and their property confiscated by Carpetbaggers. They went from there to Black Jack, Hopkins County, Texas, and made their home until April 13, 1902, when John died. In later years, she lived with her daughter, Ida Sloan Williams Ritchey and Caleb Martin Ritchey in Kiowa, Oklahoma. Serenia died February 8, 1920, and her body was returned to Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Texas for burial beside her husband. Family links: Spouse: John B.
