Although his place of birth is not listed as England on census records, family records do give London as the place.

On 10 July 1979, a government issued bronze memorial marker was dedicated to him in the Clear Springs Cemetery. Pvt. Joel Blackburn joined the Tennessee Volunteers 30 September 1813 during the War of 1812.
