Birth: Jul. 13, 1869
McLean County
Illinois, USA
Death: Apr. 15, 1939
Hand County
South Dakota, USA

George Byron Bingham was born July 13, 1869 in McLean Co., Illinois, the son of John James and Hulda Abigail (Miller) Bingham. The family came to Dakota Territory (South Dakota), and settled in Burdette Twp., Hand County in 1883.

When George was about 21, he learned that the homestead requirements had not been met on the NW 1/4 of Sec. 33 in Burdette Twp., so he trade a horse to the man for relinquishment of rights. At the same time, his future brother-in-law, Harry R. Kenyan, found the same situation on the SE 1/4 of Sec. 20, and bought it. George had a one room claim shanty on his property, but bought and moved a small house that was on the NE 1/4 of Sec. 20, which had belonged to J.J. Morris before he moved to the NW 1/4 of Sec. 19. In later years, a basement was dug and finished to live in, and finally another house was moved from the SW 1/4 of Sec. 33, (the W.F. Nobel house) and set on the basement. *These buildings are still on this property, and have housed related family...csr*

On November 27, 1895, George B. and Mary Edna (Kenyon), daughter of Robert Q. & Mary A. (Dixon) Kenyon, were married and established their home on the homestead. They were the parents of seven children; Paul R., G. Wayne, John A., Robert J., Ross Q, Mary A., and Helen L.

With the exception of the years 1920-1926, when the family moved to Benson, Minnesota, then returned to their farm, and again from 1936-1938 when they lived in Solway, Minnesota, George lived on his homestead until his death April 15, 1939, from a stroke suffered shortly before.

His funeral was held in the St. Lawrence Community Church with Rev. N. Luke in charge. Pallbearers were W.F. Pautsch, W.F. Noble, Nathan Anderson, Albert Wharton, John Roach, and Herman Schultz. Burial was in the Burdette Cemetery. His five sons were present, but his daughters were living on the West coast, and unable to attend.
