Religious Figure. Educated at St. Charles College, Ellicott City, Maryland, and at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, he was ordained June 30, 1861. Consecrated first bishop of the Vicariate Apostolic of North Carolina, August 16, 1868. He attended the First Vatican Council (and ultimately was the last of its participants to die). Named Bishop of Richmond, July 30, 1872. Named Coadjutor Archbishop of Baltimore, May 25, 1877, and succeeded to the See upon the death of Archbishop James R. Bayley, October 3, 1877. Created Cardinal Priest of the Holy Roman Church, June 7, 1886,withTitular Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. He was only the second American so honored, after John Cardinal McCloskey of New York. A widely-published author, he was also hailed as an exemplary churchman and American.
