from tape made by Aunt Bessie (102 yrs old) and given to Joyce Duke PO Box 180, Marion Kansas 66861:
"When Nellie Jeannette passed away and left Harrie with 3 yr old Bessie and 5 year old Blanche, he managed for a couple of years with the help of his sister, Jessie Faucett, who lived in nearby Hillsdale and his older daughter, Vada. Then 'Aunt Bessie' became acquainted with a woman in the community where she lived who was trying to raise three boys by herself.
A 'marriage of convenience' was arranged and Harrie married Minnie Burt to provide a home for his remaining three children and her three boys. They lived in a two story house that Harrie had built southeast of Hennessey, Oklahoma. it consisted of a huge old kitchen that had been attached to the new frame structure of four rooms. The upstairs was never finished but had been 'papered' with newspapers. The dark attic of the kitchen could be entered at one end. A big chest at the head of the stairs held the patch-work quilts that covered the iron bedsteads with their 'straw ticks' for mattresses. The house itself was situated on a slight hill that sloped off to Skeleton Creek below the out-buildings which included a 'storm cellar' for protection against cyclones, and a 'root cellar' for storing vegetables. A long gutter-pipe extended around the house to help collect water to be stored in a charcoal-filtered cistern.
In the spring of 1918, Minnie suffered some kind of stroke at the age of 40 when she was again with child. The "flu epidemic" of 1918 was raging and Roy, now 15 and working away from home, brought the "bug" home. Harrie almost died, and Minnie died on Nov. 28 1918, just 12 days after giving birth to a baby boy."
