~Death of Pioneer Citizen at Shady Glen Sunday Saddens Many Friends~

W.C. Hagans, 76, pioneer citizen of the Shady Glen Community, ten miles west of Anniston, died at his home there Sunday following an illness which covered a period of about two years, his condition becoming serious about two weeks ago. Mr. Hagan was twice married, his second wife and several small children surviving, together with several grown daughters and sons by the first union. He was a man of wide influence, a consistent church worker and generally liked by all of his neighbors and friends.
The lamented citizen suffered a severe attack of pneumonia two years ago, and his condition had been poor since that time and when the second attack came two weeks ago he grew rapidly worse.
Funeral services for Mr. Hagan were held at Morrisville Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, the interment being in the cemetery at that place.
His name appears on the Civil War Memorial Wall in Ohatchee, Calhoun Co., Ala. He entered service in May 1864 and was paroled in Talladega on April 21,1865.
"I learned of Generals R.E. Lee and Joseph Johnston surrendering after which I returned home with other's of my company." "Some days after returning home, I went to Talladega and took the oath of allegiance by a Yankee officer of US Army."
