Elmer C. Hunter, 88, from Greenwood Lake, passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born November 4, 1922, in Warwick, he was the oldest son of the late Charles and Edith Cox-Hunter.
Elmer was educated in the Greenwood Lake and Warwick School Systems. He proudly served our country in World War II, in the 931st Signal Battalion, from 1942-1946, in China, Burma and India. After retiring from the Carpenter's Union, where he worked on highway bridge construction, he was employed at International Paper. He was a carpenter and Master Craftsman, and built many beautiful keepsakes for family and friends.
Elmer was a dedicated member of the Greenwood Lake Volunteer Fire Department for 71 years and a charter member of the American Legion Post # 1443 in Greenwood Lake. He was also a loyal fan of the N.Y. Yankees and N.Y. Giants.
Along with his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his brother, Kimball. He is survived by his bride of 65 years, Dorothea (Dot); his daughters, Linda Hunter of Deerfield Beach, FL, and Barbara Freer and son-in-law, Rich of Mountaintop, PA; his sons, Chuck Hunter and daughter-in-law Lorraine of Coppell, TX, and George Hunter and daughter-in-law, Susan of Chester; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean Boomhower of Paramus, NJ; sister-in-law, Maude McCarthy of Stratford, CT; brother-in-law, Frances (Sev) Putnam and wife, Joan of Warwick, along with many nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc.; Greenwood Lake Volunteer Fire Dept., or the charity of one's choice.
