Colorado Governor. Doing well at the California Gold Rush, he later traveled to Colorado's Cherry Creek area, where he found gold in 1858. When vigilante mobs terrorized Cherry Creek prospectors, Hunt was chosen to be Judge of the Vigilante Committee of the Territory in 1861, which effectively cleared this undesirable element from the community. When the Territory of Colorado was formed, Hunt received a presidential appointment as U.S. Marshal for the Territory, a position he held for five years and was also appointed Ex-Officio Superintendent of Indian Affairs, serving both positions for five years. In 1867, President Andrew Jackson appointed him the 4th Governor the Territory of Colorado, serving until 1869. After leaving office, he continued to contribute his various skills to the Territory and was instrumental in the development of the Denver Pacific Railroad and Kansas Pacific Railroad.
