John Paul Brown

Mr. John Paul Brown, 83, of Boone, N.C., son of the late Charles W. and Myrtle Knight Brown, passed away at Roan Mountain Nursing Home, Oct. 2, 2008, after losing a four-year battle with cancer.

He was born in Creston, N.C., in the Peak Valley community, Oct. 24, 1924, and grew up in that community.

His parents were the well known Charles W. Brown and Myrtle Knight Brown.

Mr. Brown graduated from Riverview High School and served during World War II in the U.S. Marine Corp in the South Pacific.

A graduate of Appalachian State University, he earned the Bachelor's degree in Education and a Master's degree in School Administration. His years as a teacher included Ashe, Watauga, and Mecklenburg County High Schools, a private school in South Carolina, and Military Dependent Schools of Okinawa in Japan. He taught Math and coached basketball and football.

Active in politics, Mr. Brown ran on the Republican ticket for State Representative to the North Carolina Assembly and ran for the Watauga Board of Education.

Survivors include a son, Charles E. Brown of New York City; two sisters, Anita W. Brown and Mary B. McClure-Carter; one brother, Edwin Y. Brown, all of Silver Spring, Md.; and dear friend, Elizabeth McDaniel, of Sleepy Hollow, N.C.

The family received friends from 2-3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7, at Mountain City Funeral Home. Services followed at 3 p.m.

The committal service and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 8, 2008, at National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn.

* Father- Charles W. Brown, b. October 29, 1886, Ashe Co., N.C., was the son of Melton (or Milton) Brown & Emma Brown. Charles served in W. W. I; he was married to Myrtle Knight Brown.
On August 31, 1964, Asheville (Oteen), Buncombe County, N.C., Charles W. Brown, died at the V A Hospital, at the age of 77.

* Grandfather: Milton Brown
Milton Brown was born at North Fork, Ashe County, N.C., Nov. 16, 1858, the son of Mack Brown and Elvira Goss Brown. Milton was married to Emma Brown. On November 22, 1935, North Fork, Ashe Co., N.C., Milton Brown, a widower, died at the age of 77.

* Great Grandfather: Isaac Mack Brown
Isaac/Isac Mack Brown, b. Ashe Co., N.C., June 10, 1833, was the son of George Brown and Addy Osborn/Osborne Brown, both b. in Ashe Co., N.C. Isac Mack Brown married Elvira Goss. On March 11, 1918, Clifton, Ashe Co., N.C., Isaac/Isac Mack Brown, a widower, died at the age of 84 years, 9 months, and 1 day.
