Harriet Amanda Hawthorn was first married to Henry Jackson Lingo on March 31, 1852 in Washington, Iowa. I don't know where she was born or raised. They lived in Washington County, and their mailing address was Yatton.
Their children were James A. (b. 1853), Mary Ann (b. 1855), John C. (b. 1857), and Emma Lingo (b. 1861). James apparently died sometime between August 1863 and September 1866, as he is not listed as a minor child at that latter date.
Amanda's husband, Henry (Lingo), enlisted as a Private in the 22nd Iowa in August 1862, along with two of his brothers, Milton and Cawsey. Caswey and Henry both died of disease in Missouri in early 1863. (Milton survived the war).
Harriet married Franklin Holmes on 29 August 1869. He died in September 1873.
Following his death, she married Henry C. Whittington, who was a widower. His son, John Whittington, had also been a Private in the 22nd Iowa also was also killed in the Civil War.
She received a pension of $8/mo. beginning in late 1863. Starting in 1866, she received an extra $2/mo. for each minor child. After she first remarried, she did not receive a widow's pension again until 1902, when she was granted $12/mo.
From the Western Advocate of February 16, 1906:
"John Lingo of Oakland is here, summoned by the illness of his mother Mrs. Whittington."
From the Jewell County Advertiser February 15, 1906:
"Grandma Whittington, an old time resident here, died at her home in this city today at noon. She was seventy-eight years old; she leaves a family of three children, two of whom were with her when death came. The funeral will be held tomorrow and the body taken to Burr Oak [sic] for burial."
