MY PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER

Some of the family said that she died of a broken heart a couple of years after her youngest child, CYRIL, was brutally murdered in the State of Washington.

I was five years old when my grandmother died. I remember certain things about her. She was very sweet and loving, and I liked to sit on her lap and kept doing so after she was confined to her wheelchair.

ANNA married EUGENE WALTER ABLES on October 13, 1885. They lived in Santa Maria, California, and they had nine children over a period of twenty-three years:

LEONARD, ETHEL, DICK, ORA, GENEVA, HAROLD, BESSIE, EUGENE WALTER, JR. (my dad), and CYRIL.

The family moved to Los Alamitos, California where the youngest child, CYRIL, was born in June 1910. My grandfather, EUGENE WALTER, SR., died in April 1925.

In 1939, when CYRIL was approx. 28 years old, he and a friend started out on a trip to the State of Washington to try and find employment. The young men had saved money for the trip, and they were looking forward to the adventure. The were going to seek work in the woods.

CYRIL kept in constant touch with his mother and siblings along the way to Washington. One day soon, however, the calls stopped coming; there was no "checking in" and, understandably, the family was becoming terribly concerned.

My father, "WALT" ABLES, and several of his sibling brothers traveled to Washington State. I believe this happened after the family was notified of two men found murdered in a wooded area in Snohomish County; one believed to be the remains of CYRIL ABLES; both men nearly beheaded with an ax. The wooded area was located approximately ten miles east of Arlington, Washington. The bodies were recovered in March 1940.

My GRANDMOTHER ABLES was terribly affected by the horrific and senseless murders. Her health began failing, and she developed a blood clot in one of her legs requiring the leg to be amputated. She was confined to a wheelchair until her death on December 8, 1942 (two years after her son's murder). I was too young to understand any of these events, of course, so didn't question why my dear Uncle CYRIL and Grandma ABLES didn't come around anymore.
