He was raised in a farm surrounding, moved to El Paso, Texas at age 23 to run a general store, then came to Los Angeles, California engaged in a wholesale grocer operation. He purchased a milk condensery in Kent, Washington in 1899 and opened the future Carnation Co. Developer of production of evaporated milk. The evaporated milk product maintained a long shelf-life and sold under the slogan "Milk fron Contented Cows." In 1926, Carnation branched into the fresh milk and ice cream product field, introducing Carnation Fresh Milk & Carnation Malted Milk. He was head of the company between 1899-1944. The firm is now owned by Nestlé since 1984.
