Born in Minnertsga, Friesland, Holland. Son of Meinte Leenderts Dijkstra and Hendrikje Jeppes Miedema. He was a cabbage grower & co-founder of a YMCA in Minnertsga. He was the husband of Grietje Theunis Norbruis. Leendert (Leo) & Grietje (Gert) had 11 children: Hendrikje (Hattie), Meinte (Mike), Theunis (Teunis), Imkje (Emma), Dieuwke (Josie), Antje (Anna), Meinte (Mike), Jan (John Lynn), Derkje (Dora), Teuntje (Tillie), & Grietje (Gert). Wife Grietje died in childbirth with their 11th child, leaving Leendert to care for their 10 surviving children. He immigrated to America in 1897, sailing from Rotterdam aboard the S.S. Maasdam, arriving Feb. 16 and passing through Ellis Island. He settled with the children in Orange City, Sioux County, IA. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City.

Obituary (Mr. L. M. Dijkstra) appeared (in Dutch) in the Sioux County newspaper "De Volksvriend" on Dec. 7, 1916.

Obituary appeared in the Sioux County newspaper, the Alton Democrat, page 6, on December 9, 1916:
"Leendert M. Dykstra died Monday morning at the age of 75 years. Although he was not able to work the last ten years on account of his health, his death was very sudden and unexpected. Deceased was born in the Netherlands, where his wife died in 1891. In 1897 he came to this country with ten children, who survive him. They are Mrs. Houtsma at Ocheyedan, T. Dyk (sic) at Pease, Mrs. Jurriaans at Pease, Mrs. Anna Brothers at Aberdeen, S. D., M. Dykstra at Ocheyedan, John Dykstra at Slayton, Minn., Mrs. Bartels at Carmel, Mrs. Westra at Estelline, S. D., Emma and Dora Dykstra at home. Besides there are a brother and a sister in the old country and a brother at Kearney, Neb. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p. m. at the house and at 2 o'clock p. m. in the First Reformed church."
