|Death: ||Aug. 17, 2008|
Cheryll A. Hopko Maulorico, who died of complications from cancer Aug. 17 at age 63, was one of only four Ohio women to become licensed embalmers in 1970.
That same year, she began her career as a funeral director at Hopko Funeral Home, which was founded by her grandfather in 1913.
She helped manage the home at East 93rd Street on the southeast side of Cleveland until 1975, when she joined the staff at the family-owned funeral home's Parma location.
As a youngster growing up in the family living quarters above the funeral home in Cleveland, Hopko Maulorico performed such duties as cleaning, answering the phone and assisting at funerals.
She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1963 with the last class to graduate from the school's Ansel Road location before it relocated to Chardon. The former Catholic girls school now is a coeducational school known as Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School.
Hopko Maulorico, a 1969 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, belonged to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Lake Erie Post.
Hopko Funeral Home of Parma handled arrangements.
