Pauline was born and raised in Lorain Ohio by immigrant Slovak parents. She was 5'2", 130#, with blue eyes and brown hair. Her mother died when she was just 12 yrs old. The eldest of 5 children, she always felt the importance of putting family first, and did much to help raise her siblings after her mother's death and her father's remarriage.
She and her husband Michael were the owners Andrews Hardware and lived at 9319 Dunlap Ave in Cleveland, Ohio.
Pauline and Michael met at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. The two enjoyed outings to Cedar Point Amusement Park during their courtship. They married Feb. 26th, 1919, and soon welcomed their first son, Michael, into the world.
Pauline was a sunny soul, who loved the company of others and spent much time doing charity work. She also spent a lot of family time at their second home on Kelly's Island. During the summers, Pauline and the boys lived at the island house and Michael joined them each weekend after a week at the hardware store. The boys atteneded a summer camp on Kelley's opened by the pastor of their church.
On July 13, 1950, Pauline and Michael were in a train accident. She broke her neck, but was not permanently disabled and recovered in time. Michael was also seriously injured. More importantly, during his recovery it was discovered that he had leukemia. Despite care, including early radiation treatments at Ohio State University, he died early.
After Michael died, Pauline did not re-marry. She said friends encouraged her to do so, but she said, "I told them- no one could be as great as my boyfriend." :)
In later years, she and her son Paul followed son Tom and his family to the suburbs, living just 4 houses down from each other at 3927 Brainard Rd, in Orange Village. Paul also died early, but his mother kept on until a stroke and dementia put her in a nursing home for the last several years of her life. She died at Lake County Memorial Hospital-West.
