Dallas Mayor. A native of New Market, Alabama, Rodgers served as the Mayor of Dallas, Texas, from 1939 to 1947. Educated at Vanderbilt University and the University of Texas, he studied law and received his B.A. degree and his LL.B. In 1916, he began to practice law in Dallas, but later joined the United States Army during World War I. He was honorably discharged two years later with the rank of Major in the artillery. After returning to Dallas, Rodgers married, and took a job as an associate with the Saner & Saner law firm, but left in 1925 when he opened up his own firm. He eventually took over legal matters for the Standard Oil Company, and soon became interested in politics. He was elected the Mayor of Dallas in 1939, and served in that post until 1947. As mayor, he was instrumental in the Love Field expansion, construction of the Dallas Public Library, the Garza-Little Elm Reservoir, and the Central Expressway. Rodgers also held posts as director of the Dallas Symphony, the State Fair of Texas, the Dallas Public Library, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, and was the founder and president of the Greater Dallas Planning Council. Mayor Rodgers passed away in 1961, following a lengthy illness. The Woodall Rodgers Freeway, and the Woodall Rodgers Plaza, both in Dallas, were named in his memory
