John was born on his family's farm in the Town of Montgomery. Like his father, he, too, pursued farming. In addition, he served his community as the highway commissioner, the railroad commissioner, and as the Director of the Walden National Bank. He had religious affiliation with the Reformed Dutch Church and political affiliation with the Republican Party.
On 16 November 1826, he married another Montgomery resident, Cornelia Haines. The couple had six known children, two of whom fought in the Civil War.
His age at death was 80 years and 7 months.
