Donte' DeShawn Newsome, 25, originally from Chesapeake, VA, died early Saturday, July 5, 2008, at St. Mary's Medical Center after being fatally shot outside a night club in West Virginia.
Donte was a former Deep Creek High School, Chesapeake, football player and Marshall University football player. He was a first-team All-Southeastern District running back for Deep Creek and played linebacker at Marshall through the 2005 season and played at least two seasons with the Huntington Heroes indoor football team. This season, he had scored 11 touchdowns in eight games for the Amarillo Dusters in the Arena Football 2 league.
An impromptu candlelight vigil, in front of the nightclub where Newsome had attended before shots struck him on Fourth Avenue in Huntington, WV, was held Sunday, July 6, 2008 in Newsome's memory.
The Amarillo Dusters of the A2 League -- a Triple A Minor League for Arena Football, -- will retire Donte Newsome's No. 2 jersey, according to the team's website, http://www.dustersfootball.com. Calling him one of the "top on the team," Newsome had earned the JLS Ironman Award and the Schutt Offensive Player of the Week Award. The tribute is planned for July 21, 2008.

He attended Green Run High School then graduated from Deep Creek High School and Marshall University. He played football for Marshall University, the Amarillo Dusters and the Huntington Heroes.
A former member of St. Marks RZUA Church, Norfolk, he served on the youth usher board.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Caliyah and Suniyah; parents, Bruce and Angela Smith; four brothers, Antonio Lomba, Bruce Smith II, DeShawn and DeWayne Brock; two sisters, Breck and Tennesha Smith; grandmother, Geraldine Reynolds (Willie), Alice Newsome and Cora Williams; great-grandmother, Nannie Cowell; grandfather, Leon Cowell Sr.; six aunts and five uncles.
Services conducted at Deep Creek Baptist Church Monday, July 14, 2008, at 1pm by Pastor Ernie Meyers. Burial Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, from 2pm to 5pm July 13, 2008.
