Darrel Roetman was born to Clifford and Fern (Tofflemire) Roetman. They lived on a farm east of Wessington Springs. He moved with his family to a farm near Lake Wilson, MN in 1939. He received the rest of his elementary education and several years of high school in Lake Wilson. The family returned to a farm by Wessington Springs in 1947. He continued his high school education in Wessington Springs.

Darrel enlisted in the US Army March of 1951, completed his basic training at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He served as a sergeant based in California, during the Korean Conflict, until March of 1953. He returned to the family farm and continued Agriculture education until honorable discharge in Feb. 1957.

He was united in marriage to Elaine Mettler of Wessington Springs, SD on January 8, 1954. They lived in Wessington Springs while Darrel continued farming with his dad. Then they moved on to a farm west of Wessington Springs.

He was an avid horseman (also broke horses) had dairy cows, raised registered Hereford cattle and various crops. He received special recognition as Range man of the year and other soil conservation awards.

Darrel was baptized, confirmed and an active member of the United Methodist Church. Chairman of trustees for many years and involved in other church projects.

He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Farmers Union, Chairman of Prairie Farm Supply and managed the Hatch Farms for many years.

He started the Jerauld County Food Pantry through the ministerial association and county health nurse. He served as chairman of it for 22 years.

He received much enjoyment working with cattle and loved raising many different kinds of pigeons and chickens. He participated in educating young elementary school children and their teachers about life on a farm. He was an avid reader, listened to country western music and enjoyed traveling to Alaska to visit and fish for Halibut and Salmon with family.

Darrel is survived by his wife, three daughters, eight grandchildren, and one brother.

He was a respected, loving, husband and father.

Military rites were provided by the Wessington Springs American Legion and South Dakota National Guard Military Honors Group.
