Bernie attended a country school for one year and then attended Sanborn Public School until the third grade. The family moved to Hospers, Iowa. Bernie attended school in Newkirk, Iowa and graduated from Newkirk High School in 1948. He attended Iowa State University in Ames for one year.
In 1950, he started his own digging business. Bernie served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from March 1952 to March 1954.
He was united in marriage to Alyda Kreykes of Sheldon on March 26, 1954, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. The couple lived in Sheldon.
All of Bernie's working years, he was in the digging and field tiling business and in the manufacturing of cement tile.
He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon, having served as elder and deacon. He also served on the school board of the Sheldon Christian School. He was a member of American Legion Post 145.
Bernie enjoyed traveling with his wife, trapshooting with his sons, snowmobiling, driving his dump truck and flying in his younger years.
He is survived by his wife, four children, twelve grandchildren, one brother and one sister.
