Lyle Douglas Morrison Jr. was born in Muskegon, Michigan, the firstborn son of Lyle D. Morrison and Pauline (Beauregard). He was a wonderful big brother to his little sister, Nancy, and youngest sibling, David.
As a young man he met and fell in love with Mary Jo Swanson, a young lady who worked in a Grand Rapids area hospital. Following their courtship, he and Mary Jo were married at the home of a friend in Muskegon. They remained in Muskegon for a while before relocating to Grand Rapids. In July 1977 they had their only child, a son named Jason.
After his divorce, Lyle met and became partners with Wendell Eugene Powell, Jr. He had his last name legally changed to Powell in the 1980s. He and "Gene" made their home in Battle Creek, MI. Lyle obtained a business degree from Argubright College and went to work for Chicago Title Company, where he remained for more than 20 years. He was well liked and made many friends there.
Lyle was an extremely caring, respectful, hard-working and dedicated man. Lyle was as introspective and quiet as he was intelligent and quick-witted. Although he enjoyed the company of others, he was a textbook introvert and he loved books and music. An accomplished cook, he was known to experiment with recipes, always seeking new ways to make frugal and tasty meals for the family. He was particularly passionate about classic cars, favoring Cadillacs most of all. He tenderly restored two retired hearses and when questioned about them, made the simple observation that "from the inside they were simply limousines." He was particularly amused when he noticed how many people avoided making eye contact when he drove them, and he noted that his cars were seldom subjected to "door dings" since most folks refused to park near them. Whenever he had the opportunity he indulged in classic car shows. Lyle also had a weakness for dogs, and was devoted to his retired racing greyhound, "Naragon" and his aging Chihuahua, "Eddie Bear."
Lyle was planning to relocate to be near his sister at the time of his death. He was the primary caregiver to his longtime friend and partner, "Gene" who was suffering with chronic respiratory problems. Although Lyle had some health problems of his own, he devoted himself to caring for his friend for as long as he was able. His sudden and untimely death came as a shock to his loved ones.
He is survived by his son, Jason (Carey) Morrison; grandson, Cayden; mother Paula Maus; his sister, Nancy (William) Lawrence; his brother, David Maus; his former wife, Mary Jo Fleming; several nieces and nephews; and his partner of 27 years, Wendell Powell. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father.
Lyle you meant so much more to me than
words could ever express. If I managed
to convey nothing else, I hope you learned
how much you are loved. May God welcome
you with open arms into your eternal
rest with Him.
Although the name is different, Lyle's memorial is actually sponsored by his sister, Nancy Lawrence.
