Lewis Bailey Hunt was born March 31, 1837, in Ohio county, Indiana and died Thursday, Feb. 9, 1911 at the St. Frances Hospital, Wichita, at the age 73 years, 10 months and 9 days.
He spent the early part of his life near Rising Sun, Ind. and in 1862 enlisted in the 83rd Regiment of the Indiana Infantry, Company "B" in which command he rendered faithful and meritorious service until June 27, 1864, when he was wounded in the right hand at Kenesaw Mountain by a piece of shell, causing the loss of his hand with the exception of the thumb and first finger. On account of this wound he received an honorable discharge on Nov. 12th, 1864. He was constantly with his command during its service, until wounded, and bore a galiant part in all its engagements down to Kenesaw Mountain.
He came to Kansas in 1871 and was united in marriage to Anna R. Canning, January 23rd. 1876 at Eureka. To this union four children were born; three of whom with their mother survive, Mrs. Fred Doan, of Neodesha, Miss Almee and Arthur of Eureka, all of whom were present at the funeral. He also leaves four brothers and three sisters, of whom Mrs. Charles Chandler is living in Eureka.
Mr. Hunt had been a member of the Dick Yates Post No. 50 at Eureka for several years.
He was an honest, upright, citizen and a kind and loving father and husband.
Funeral services, conducted by Pastor G.G. Horne were held at the late residence on North Main, Saturday morning.
Interment was in the Greenwood cemetery.
