Mary Millar
Birth: Jul. 26, 1936
Death: Nov. 10, 1998

Actress. Her first professional job was in 1950 at the Empire Theater where she performed in a variety show as a singer. Millar's first big break was in 1960 where she worked in New York as Julie Andrews' understudy in "Camelot." She continued to perfrom in the musical theater through the 1980s. A highlight of this period was in 1986 where she landed the role of 'Madame Giry' in the London cast of "Phantom of the Opera." She stayed with the production for four years. After leaving "Phantom," she turned to television in 1991 and is best known for her role as the sexually frustrated 'Rose' in the BBC sitcom "Keeping Up Appearances." She won great recognition for this role opposite Patricia Routledge until the close of the series in 1995. Performing on stage was her preference, and she found another successful role as 'Mrs. Potts' in the British version of "Beauty and the Beast." Illness forced her to leave the production in 1998 and she died after a battle with cancer on November 10 of that year. She was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium, London, England. (bio by: Barbara K)
