Mr. E.J. "Buster" Brown
Statesboro, Ga. - Mr. E.J. "Buster" Brown, age 71, died unexpectedly Friday evening. Buster was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. It was said that he did not meet a stranger. A native of Augusta, Arkansas, he attended Laura G. Conner High School in Augusta and the University of Arkansas where he played football for the Razorbacks. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy after leaving college.
He was transferred to Statesboro in 1974 as a machine shop supervisor for ITT Grinnell. After 15 years with Grinnell he worked in the construction industry. Buster retired from McKnight Construction Company where he worked as a Construction Superintendent for many years. Following retirement, he worked for Vandys for a short time.
Buster was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and a communicant of St. Matthews Catholic Church. Buster loved his family and canine companions most of all. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors. He enjoyed people and could be found at the counter at Vandys every Friday and Saturday night greeting and interacting with customers and staff alike. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elga and Metta Brown, and his brother Val Brown of Augusta, AR.
Buster will be greatly missed by his wife of over 30 years Barbara Hayes Brown of Statesboro; his daughter Lori (Worth) Presley of Statesboro; his son Matt (Courtney) Brown of Statesboro; his brother Paul (Diane) Brown; his sister Tina Werley; and his cousin Sonny (Mary Sue) Covington all of Augusta, AR; his father and mother-in-law Jim and Barbara Hayes of Statesboro and Ormond Beach FL; his brother-in-law Jim (Bambi) Hayes of Ormond Beach, FL; his sister-in-law Elaine (Richie) Anderson of Lawrenceville, GA; his sister-in-law Susan (Rick) Gaines of Ormond Beach, FL; his brother-in-law Steve (Jennifer) Hayes of Dacula, GA; and his sister-in-law Joyce Hayes of Washington, DC.
His grandchildren were the light of his life. "Papa" will be missed by his granddaughter Valarie Kinard and her fiancÚ Mark Anderson, his granddaughter Amy Presley, and his grandson Will Presley all of Statesboro. He will be especially missed by his "girls" Sophie, Peanut, and Beau who has been his faithful and constant companions.
Uncle Buster was a favorite with his many nieces and nephews: James Hayes, and Ryan, Kyle and Kristen Gaines of Ormond Beach FL; Sara Hayes of Lawrenceville; Taylor, Jorden, Riley, and Steven Hayes of Dacula, and Samuel Hayes of Washington, DC; Also Carrie (Roger) Bowling; Lisa (Chris) Graves, and Paula Fortune of Arkansas.
The visitation will be held on Sunday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
A private family rosary will be held.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Father Tim McKeown and Father Mike Smith officiating.
Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Tony Sammons, Justin Smith, Henry Shateen, Jeff Morris, John Rivers and Ike Metts.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Matthew Catholic Church, 221 John Paul Ave, Statesboro, GA 30458.
Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
