Joseph's birth parents were Montgomery Elmer TABER, Sr. and Nellie L. WRIGHT. Mont and Nellie divorced and Mont remarried. As a young child, Joseph was adopted into the household of his aunt, Florence Caroline (WRIGHT) MOORMAN and her husband, Arthur Richmond MOORMAN, who raised him as their child. His correct birth date was October 2, 1910, not 1912 as is indicated on his grave marker and on his Social Security application.

Joseph's adoptive father was a civil engineer and was involved in the oil refinery business. His work took him to a variety of locations throughout the country.

Joseph served in the Merchant Marine in WWII.

His first marriage ended in divorce in 1980, and he then married Lovie Frances Wilson in 1981.
