Hugh William Bretton, son of William and Angie Preston Bretton, was born on a farm in Rushville Township south of Speed, April 22, 1905. He departed this life Aug. 3, 1991 at Evergree Health Center in Phllipsburg at the age of 86.

He attended Locust Grove School; Oct. 17,1934, he was united in marriage to Edna May LaRue in Stockton. Five children were born to this union: Dale, Dean, Darrell and an infant son and daughter. The Brettons lived and farmed in Rushville Township unitl 1965, when they moved into Glade. Hugh continued to farm as his health allowed and lived in Glade, along with his son Dale and wife Joyce and family after the death of Edna in January, 1986.

Hugh and Edna shared their home with Hugh's brother Phil for many years and later with his mother Angie and sister Delphia.

Survivors include three sons: Dale and wife Joyce of Glade, Dean and wife Marie of Minneaspolis, Darrell and wife Elaine of Kensighton; one sister, Leota Horn of Phillipsburg; sister-in-law, LaVern LaRue of Stockton; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

The Rev. Dan Breda officiated the service in memory of Hugh W. Bretton at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug.6 in Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel of Phillipsburg, Fred R. Henrichs, accompanied by Helen Witmer, sang "Whispering Hope" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Casket bearers were Al Plante, John Walker, Rusty Gibson, Jerry and Richard Bretton, Delwin LaRuse, Bart Willey and Bill Dibble. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, under the direction of Olliff-Boeve.
