James Hines Jr.
Pembroke - James Hines Jr., 78, died Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center. He was a member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent for more than 20 years. He was a deacon and vice chairman of the church. He was a graduate of Dorchester Academy and attended Clark College and Savannah State College. He was a first sergeant in the U.S. Army and was employed by Star E&W Laundry for many years. He was the Bryan County coordinator for the Coastal Georgia Community Action Authority and served on the Bryan County Zoning Committee and as president of the local NAACP.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Mary Jones Hines of Pembroke; seven children, James Hines II of Philadelphia, Stanford and Thomas Hines, both of Savannah, Gregory Jones of Fort Washington, Md., Paul Jones of St. Marys, Avis H. Washington of Pembroke and Hubert Hines of San Diego; two sisters, Effie Frazier of Passaic, N.J., and Mary Brown of Waycross; 13 grandchildren, an uncle and other relatives.
VISITATION: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today at Harper's Funeral Home, Claxton. VIGIL: 7-8 p.m. today at Harper's Funeral Home, Claxton. FUNERAL: 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Groveland, burial in the church cemetery.
