RICHMOND HILL - Robert Lee Walters, 61, died Jan. 27, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Walters was born on Oct. 5, 1946, in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was a graduate of Clay High School. He served in the Marine Corps and the Army, from which he retired in 1991. He is a veteran of both Vietnam and Desert Storm. He received a Bronze and Silver Star for his service in Vietnam.
Walters was employed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah Airport Security (TSA) and retired from the Hinesville Police Department in 2001. He was a member of many organizations, including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Khe Sanh Veterans Association, Marine Corps Association, Army National Guard and Darien Lions Club. He was a member of the Christian Baptist Church in Sciotoville, Ohio, Shellman Bluff Baptist Church in Shellman Bluff and Coastal Community Christian Church in Richmond Hill. He also served as vice president of the McIntosh County Republican Party.
He was preceded in death by his father, David W. Walters Sr., and his brother, David W. Walters Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Wilma Jean Walters; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Walters of Darien; his mother, Lydia Douglas of New Boston, Ohio; a brother, Donald Walters of Lucasville, Ohio; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Jan. 28 at the Richmond Hill Funeral Home. Services were Jan. 29 at Coastal Community Christian Church, Richmond Hill, with Pastor Mark Snavely officiating. Burial was at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery.
