He was reported missing in Stalingrad, Russia on January 1, 1943. This date could possibly be the date he died.
Since Friedrich's remains were never identified, his name was memorialzed in this cemetery at Volgograd in Rossoschka. Granite cubes (dice) were engraved with the names of the dead and missing. The names were then arranged in alphabetical order. There are 103,234 soldiers listed on the cubes.
