William A. Chandler was born in 1817 in Genesee County, New York, the son of David Chandler and Comfort Gilman. He spent his childhood in New York and as a young man he moved to Lenawee County, Michigan. William's mother had married as her second husband Felix Holdridge in 1840, and he probably followed her to the state.

William was married first in December 1841 to Fannie Green. She died in 1849. The couple had three children- Caroline, Winfield, and David. William soon married in 1850 in Lenawee County to Margaret Newman. In the 1850 census William was listed with Margaret and was working as a farmer. Margaret gave birth to a son, William, Jr.

The Chandler lived in southern Michigan until 1864, when they moved north to East Bay township, Grand Traverse County. In the winter William worked as a logger, farming in the summer. He became quite prosperous, despite a fire that destroyed the family home. William was involved in many real estate transactions.

William voted with the Republican party. At the 1876 Grand Traverse area agricultural fair he won awards for his Early Rose potatoes, Black Spanish chickens, Dorking chickens, and pigs. He spent the winter of 1877 in Alabama, trying to regain health after a sickness.

William died in 1893 from paralysis (a stroke) at his home in East Bay township. In his will he left his property to his wife Margaret and asked that money be used to buy tombstones for himself and his wife. His son David was requested to take care of wife Margaret. William was also survived by three of his four children.
