William was the only son of John Amberson and Ann Davis. William grew up in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, living with his father for a short time and then with Richard Gray.
Shortly before January 5, 1845, William lost his mother. His father had gone to California.
A Richard Gray was appointed guardian of William and numerous court records show his representing William in sell of property that belong to William's mother.
By the late 1870's William had move to California and settle in Humboldt County, California. The family lived in California until sometime after 1888, then moved to Gallatin County, Montana.
