A four year veteran of the U.S. Border Patrol has died from an automobile accident incurred in the line of duty. Senior Patrol Agent Nicholas Darren Greenig, 28, had been dispatched to border patrol assistance within the Tohono O'odham Reservation when he struck a cow, according to Johnny Bernal, a spokesperson in the Office of Public Affairs for the Tucson Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol.

Agent Geenig's collision occured along a stretch of Highway 86 shortly after 10 P.M. on Tuesday, March 14. The Montana native's vehicle spun and rolled numerous times, sending him to the hospital where a day later he was pronounced dead.

A second plainclothes agent was in the car with Greenig and was hospitalized with minor injuries. The Tohono O'odham Police Department is currently investigating the accident.

Greenig is the sixth agent from the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector killed in the line of duty since 1926, and is their first line of duty death since 2004.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent died in the line of duty Tuesday evening when a car he was in slammed into a cow in western Pima County, an official said Wednesday.

Senior Patrol Agent Nicholas Greenig, a four-year agent from Montana, and another agent were on duty in plainclothes patrolling a section of Arizona 86 near Why, 110 miles west of Tucson, when the accident occurred around 8 p.m., said Gustavo Soto, a spokesman for the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector.

The other agent suffered minor injuries and was recovering at a hospital. That agent's name was not released. Officials couldn't say which agent was driving the vehicle, but said both were wearing seat belts.

The Tohono O'odham Police Department is investigating the accident. "The Border Patrol's thoughts and wishes are with Nicholas' family," Soto said. "He was an outstanding agent and he will be missed."

Greenig and the other agent were assigned to the Ajo substation, Soto said.

Border Patrol agents from Southern Arizona have been in accidents involving wildlife in the past, but those were minor incidents, Soto said. Greenig is the sixth agent from the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector killed in the line of duty since 1926.

The last line-of-duty death for area Border Patrol agents was in December 2004, when agent George DeBates died in a rollover crash on Federal Route 21 on the Tohono O'odham Reservation. He was assigned to the Casa Grande substation.
